Why Humor Is the Key to Engaging, Effective Financial Education

For years, I struggled to describe what I do. I wasn’t just a comedian. I wasn’t just a financial speaker. I was both.

More importantly, I was a communicator and connector with a passion for personal finance and a unique ability to get audiences to attend, open up, and make change in their lives. I wanted to use humor and motivational speaking to increase financial literacy, boost financial wellness, and launch as many individuals as possible toward financial capability.

Eventually, I landed on the title Financial Comedian—or even better, Funny Financial Speaker.

These job titles might sound made up—because they are. By me.

I created them to describe something I didn’t see enough of out there: an engaging, uplifting, and entertaining way to talk about money that makes people both laugh and think.

What Is a Funny Financial Speaker?

A Financial Comedian, or Funny Financial Speaker, is a motivational speaker who blends humor, storytelling, and interactive discussion to help audiences learn about money in a way that feels empowering, personal, safe, and even fun.

“We were super impressed with how engaged our students were in Colin’s message, and how willing they were to share. Colin brings that out in people with his authentic and relatable way of talking to the crowd.”

Why Humor Belongs in Financial Education

Let’s face it—traditional financial presentations are often filled with statements like:

  • “This is what you're doing wrong, and you need to change everything immediately.”

  • “The decisions you make today will affect you forever.”

  • “Money isn't a game. There are no free lunches.”

Hearing this, the audience often thinks:
"You’ve completely derailed my confidence and overwhelmed me… That’s too much pressure... This makes me want to go on a revenge shopping spree just to prove how much fun I can have... Thanks for being depressing and sounding just like every lecture from an adult I've gotten."

These kinds of messages don’t motivate change. They create shame, fear, and avoidance.

That’s why financial comedy exists. Humor may be the hook, but the real purpose is creating safety and connection. It opens people up so they can actually hear the important messages that follow.

The Three Tools of Financial Comedy

1. Humor

Humor isn’t just entertainment—it’s a state break. It cuts through anxiety, lowers defenses, and invites people into the conversation. People remember how they felt, and laughter makes learning easier.

2. Storytelling

Stories are more memorable than facts. One study found that while only 5% of people remember a statistic, 63% remember a story. Storytelling is how we share why money matters, not just how it works.

3. Audience Interaction

Financial education—when done right—creates a space where people feel safe enough to ask questions, share mistakes, and get curious. That’s what moves people toward financial capability. Through interactive techniques, I help people realize they’re not alone, and that talking about money doesn’t have to be taboo.

Who I Work With (and What They Take Away)

Financial Keynote for Students and Professionals

Whether you’re trying to engage:

  • College students who feel intimidated by budgeting or student loans, or are tempted by get-rich-quick schemes like sports-gambling and influencers’ cryptocurrency promises of “a sure thing”

  • Employees who want to build real-world financial confidence, repay loans, and save for retirement

  • Clients who need to feel safe and smart when talking about money, and have a sense of trust in their advisor before they take action

…I help people shift from financial fear to financial freedom.

My goal is simple: to increase financial literacy, boost financial wellness, and help people take real, confident steps toward their goals.

Training for Financial Professionals

In addition to speaking to students and adults, I also train financial professionals across the finance industry—including:

  • Accountants

  • Financial advisors

  • Wealth managers

  • Banking and credit union professionals

  • Collections professionals

  • Financial educators and counselors

  • Financial planners

Through engaging trainings and keynotes, I teach these professionals how to:

  • Use storytelling to connect on a human level

  • Use humor to make financial information stick

  • Use vulnerability to build trust-based, ongoing relationships with clients

For Over 15 Years I’ve Been a Collaborative Partner with Financial Professionals and Event Organizers

Whether you’re trying to engage college students, employees, or your own clients with something unique and valuable, I help audiences move past the fear that money is boring, scary, or depressing—and instead see it as something they can understand, can talk about, and can take action on.

I also train financial professionals across the finance industry—including accountants, financial advisors, wealth managers, banking and credit union professionals, collection professionals, financial educators, and financial planners—on how to make their own presentations more human, memorable, and trustworthy. I show them powerful and immediately actionable ways to use tools like storytelling, humor, and vulnerability to build real, trust-based, ongoing relationships with clients and audiences.

If you want to give your audience something they’ll remember—and act on—this is the shift.
